Phase 5: Iron Cardio

Published

During the early experimentation period, a recurring training style became especially useful.

Resistance exercises were performed continuously with minimal rest using loads that could be sustained while maintaining good technique.

This style became known inside Adaptive Training as Iron Cardio.

Iron Cardio occupies the space between traditional strength work and conventional cardio.

The objective is not simply to perform resistance exercises quickly.

The defining characteristic is continuous, technically sound resistance training that can be sustained.

It develops:

  • work capacity
  • muscular endurance
  • conditioning
  • resistance-training density
  • strength endurance

while generally creating less recovery cost than repeated maximal efforts.

Iron Cardio became particularly useful when training time was limited.
